Hiya everybody!! I am an Amish Industrial Worker for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!! Nice to meet you!
jk jk, that's just a joke. Our lovely friend Stephen totally roasted me one day during our lesson. So it is getting pretty cold here right? So obviously I wear long skirts and my long rain coat. And I wear my cute, nifty, durable Doc martens to go with it, makes sense right? We are sitting there during a lesson and Stephen goes, ''can I just say something? Those shoes don't suit you, you look like an industrial worker.'' Then continues on, the other day while we were walking away from our lesson Stephen was thinking, ''they look very amish''...So yea, he roasted us, but hey that's ok! I'll take it:)
Alright, here's the other highlights and funny things of the week:
- we helped two sisters in our ward clean out the primary and nursery rooms in the church and found some very cool glasses and old church books. It was awesome:)
- got to help out with the Poppy Appeal this week!!
*INSERT MINI HISTORY LESSON*
*so the Poppy Appeal starts on October 27-Nov 13th. It is a couple weeks of remembering all the fallen soldiers who have fought in World War I, II, and other wars. It was started in 1921, actually by an American woman, who wore a poppy in rememberance of the fallen. Since then, every year during these weeks, everyone wears poppy pins and accessories to symbolize it! And on the 11th it is Remberance day and at the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month, there is a moment of silence. So pretty cool thing to be a part of!! When people wear the poppy, the leaf is pointed in the direction of the 11th hour.
-so yea, we were able to work a shift at the local grocery store, passing out poppy pins and what have ya:)
- went whiteboard finding in Durham as a district on Saturday!! My favorite way to find! We asked people, ''What are you thankful for?''
-went on exchanges with Sister Richards! She is the best and just a great example to me. We got this Italian street food pizza where they fold it in half like a pizza haha, it was delicious
-Guy Fawkes day was on Saturday!!
*INSERT 2ND HISTORY LESSON*
*So basically, in 1605 this guy named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament, but was caught in action and was burned at the stake. So every year, England celebrates this by having bonfire night. Overtime it has been modernized and they just have massive bonfires and massive firework shows, but they used to make a straw man and wheel him in a wheelbarrow and collect pennies at everyones door for Parliament. Then they would burn the straw man. They also used to just burn straw figures in the massive bonfire, some still do
- it seems weird to me to celebrate someone being burned at the stake? But I guess it's an excuse to light fireworks haha, and boy did they do just that
- taught English class again!! It's going great
-ALSO, transfer news!!! I am getting a brand new companion named Sister Flake!! She gets here on Tuesday and I am so stoked! Also, I am staying in Darlington! Woot woot!! I absolutely love it here:)
- oh yea! On pday we had a stake pday with the 14 other missionaries in our stake. We had a potluck and played a ton of sports for 4 hours straight. I'm talking volleyball, street hockey, knockout, ping pong, card games, spikeball. No breaks in between. And man was I so sore for the next couple of days haha. I forget that I don't get to play sports a ton and when I do I get so excited I don't stop until I drop. And then I pay for it the next day haha.
But it was a good week!!
Love,
Sis jepp:)
